How to Use the Color Palette Extractor

Upload an image using the drag-and-drop zone above. The tool will analyze the image and extract the 8 most dominant colors automatically. These colors are calculated using a color quantization algorithm that processes the image pixels and identifies the most frequently occurring colors. Once extracted, you can instantly generate complementary, analogous, and triadic color palettes based on your dominant color.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the dominant colors calculated?

The tool reads all pixels from your image and groups similar colors together. It then counts which color groups appear most frequently and returns the top 8. This gives you the colors that most define the visual appearance of your image.

Why do I get 8 colors instead of fewer?

8 colors provides a good balance between having enough variety for complex palettes while still capturing the essence of your image. The most important colors are listed first, so focus on the top 2-3 if you want a simpler palette.

Can I adjust the extracted colors?

This tool extracts colors directly from your image. For further adjustments, copy the hex values into a color picker or design tool and tweak them as needed. You can also re-upload a cropped or edited version of your image.

Is my image stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. All color extraction happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to our servers and never leaves your device.

What image formats are supported?

PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, and most common image formats are supported. Use PNG for lossless quality.

How accurate is the color extraction?

The accuracy depends on the image. Images with clear, distinct colors will give more accurate results. Photos with lots of gradients or photorealistic content may produce colors that are blended or muted averages of the actual colors present.

Can I use these colors commercially?

Yes. The colors extracted from your image are derived from your own image file. You can use them freely in any project.
